Viharn Sien

A hidden gem just outside of Pattaya, Viharn Sien (Viharnra Sien) is often overlooked by tourists. Also known as the Anek Kusala Sala (Dan Fu Yuan)[, it is a museum hosted in the former temple that houses an impressive collection of Chinese arts and various artefacts. The museum was built in 1987 to celebrate the 60th birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, a great admirer of Chinese art.

We enter through a big Chinese gate with a red tiled roof, golden dragons and signs of yin and yang. From here, the museum looks like a Chinese palace.

Położone około pół godziny samochodem od Pattayi Muzeum Viharn Sien jest często pomijane przez turystów. Znane również jako Anek Kusala Sala lub Dan Fu Yuan, miejsce to zawiera imponującą kolekcję chińskiej sztuki i innych artefaktów. Muzeum zostało zbudowane w 1987 roku z okazji 60. urodzin króla Bhumibol Adulyadej, wielkiego miłośnika sztuki chińskiej.

Na teren dawnej świątyni wchodzimy przez chińską bramę z dachem z czerwonej dachówki, złotymi smokami po flankach oraz znakami yin i yang na drzwiach. Z tego miejsca muzeum przypomina typowy kompleks pałacowy, otoczony murem.

Before we enter the main building, we can see a number of mythological protagonists, and they seem to be more incredible than even Marvel’s heroes. There are also two giant Pekin lions carved in stone and statues of various monks.

Zanim wejdziemy do głównego budynku, możemy zobaczyć szereg mitologicznych bohaterów, którzy nie wydawaliby się nie na miejscu w komiksach Marvela. Są też dwa gigantyczne lwy pekińskie wyrzeźbione w kamieniu i posągi różnych mnichów.

The main building of the museum is three-story tall and quite spacious. The museum’s main hall is a replica of the Hall of Mental Cultivation in Beijing’s Forbidden City and houses a stunning collection of porcelain and bronze sculptures.

One of the most impressive exhibits in the museum is the collection of over 300 terracotta warrior replicas and horses, which are arranged in rows just like the actual terracotta warriors in China. There are even seven real Terra Cotta warriors on display, too. This is one of few places outside of China where you can see it. Other exhibits include jade carvings, antique furniture, and ancient Chinese weapons.

Główny budynek muzeum ma trzy piętra i jest bardzo rozległy. Najważniejsza sala muzeum jest repliką Sali Kulturowej w Zakazanym Mieście w Pekinie i zawiera imponującą kolekcję porcelany i rzeźb z brązu.  

Jedną z wyróżniających się ekspozycji muzeum jest kolekcja ponad 300 replik wojowników terakotowych, ustawionych w rzędach tak jak prawdziwi wojownicy terakotowi w Chinach. Siedem figurek to podobno nawet oryginały. Pattaya to jedno z niewielu miejsc poza Chinami, gdzie można to obejrzeć. Inne eksponaty obejmują rzeźby z jadeitu, antyczne meble i starożytną chińską broń.

Art in Paradise

It is our last breakfast in the Golden Tulip as this afternoon we transfer to the U Pataaya.

For now, we leave our luggage at the hotel and take a taxi to the Art in Paradise. And there, for several hours, we behave like seven-year-olds. I don't need to write anything; the pictures are enough.

Zostawiamy nasze bagaże w recepcji hotelu i jedziemy taksówką do Art in Paradise. I tam przez kilka godzin zachowujemy się jak siedmiolatki. nie muszę nic pisać; zdjęcia wystarczą.

Sanctuary of Truth

The sanctuary of truth is a continuously built (starting from 1981, and predicted to be finished around 2025) “temple-like” museum sponsored by a late Thai businessman (who is also responsible for Muang Boran and Erawan Museum). The place is sometimes described as the Ayutthaya Kingdom and through its architecture and sculptures, it reflects many Buddhism and Hindu beliefs, although the main idea is to represent some universal human ideals and moral rules. You can also notice elements of Thai, Indian, Chinese and Cambodian myths and legends incorporated into this enormous story-telling endeavour.

Sanktuarium prawdy jest nieustannie budowanym (począwszy od 1981 roku, a jego zakończenie przewiduje się około 2025 r.) przypominającym świątynię muzeum sponsorowanym przez nieżyjącego już tajskiego biznesmena (odpowiedzialnego również za Muang Boran i Erawan Museum). Miejsce to jest czasami określane jako Królestwo Ayutthaya, a poprzez swoją architekturę i rzeźby odzwierciedla wiele wierzeń buddyzmu i hinduizmu, chociaż główną ideą jest reprezentowanie uniwersalnych ludzkich ideałów i zasad moralnych. Można również zauważyć elementy mitów i legend tajskich, indyjskich, chińskich i kambodżańskich włączone do tego ogromnego przedsięwzięcia narracyjnego.

The “temple” is constructed entirely from wood and all its intricate sculptures and decorations are hand-curved. Various types of wood are used, including redwood, mahogany, and teak which are reflected in different colours of the sculptures - from deep ochre, through various shades of brown to grey. Interestingly, the old technique of attaching wood according to ancient Thai craftsmanship is used instead of nails. It is possible to see the workers sculpting figures for the next section of the building and the explanation of how various parts of the wood are attached is also provided.

„Świątynia” jest w całości zbudowana z drewna, a wszystkie jej misterne rzeźby i dekoracje są wykonane ręcznie. Wykorzystane zostały tu różne gatunki drewna, m.in. sekwoja, mahoń i drewno tekowe, co widać m.in. w różnych kolorach rzeźb – od głębokiej ochry, poprzez różne odcienie brązów, aż po szarości. Co ciekawe, zamiast gwoździ zastosowano technikę mocowania drewna według starożytnego tajskiego rzemiosła. Na terenie muzeum można obserwować, jak robotnicy rzeźbią figury do następnej części budynku, a także zobaczyć, w jaki sposób są przymocowane do siebie różne części drewna.

The temple faces the sea on one side and an artificial lake on the other. Even with the scaffoldings in a few places the building is a proper visual extravaganza. The more you look, the more you see and there is not a moment for the eyes (and brain) to rest.

Świątynia z jednej strony dochodzi do samego brzegu morza a z drugoej graniczy ze sztucznym jeziorkiem.

Nawet z rusztowaniami w kilku miejscach budynek jest prawdziwą wizualną ekstrawagancją. Im więcej patrzysz, tym więcej widzisz i ani oczy ani mózg nie nie mają chwili na odpoczynek.

The interior is just one huge piece of art. You simply do not know where one sculpture ends and another begins. This art tells about so many things that I am sure during this one visit we absorbed only a small bit of it, even though we wandered around for a good few hours. Truth, just like the sun and moon will never remain hidden for long. Materialistic pleasures will not make you fulfilled and cannot make you happy for long. The goodness of the heart will leave a permanent mark whilst the beauty of the body will be gone before you blink your eyes. Humans cannot survive without nature. Parental love is perfect even in its imperfections. And so on, and so on. The only blot on the landscape of this beautiful experience is the elephants’ rides offered to the visitors. What a shame.

Wnętrze monumentu to jedno wielkie dzieło sztuki. Trudno rozróżnić, gdzie kończy się jedna rzeźba, a zaczyna kolejna. Poprzez sztukę mówi się tu o tak wielu rzeczach, że  na pewno podczas tej jednej wizyty odebraliśmy tylko niewielką część przekazu, mimo że chodziliśmy po wnętrzu przez dobrych kilka godzin. „Prawda, podobnie jak słońce i księżyc, nigdy nie pozostaną w ukryciu na długo. Materialistyczne przyjemności nie zapewnią nam poczucia spełnienia i nie sprawią, że będziemy szczęśliwi. Dobroć serca pozostawi trwały ślad, podczas gdy piękno ciała zniknie. Ludzie nie mogą przetrwać bez natury. Miłość rodzicielska jest doskonała nawet w swoich niedoskonałościach.” I tak dalej, i tak dalej.

Jedyną łyżką dziegciu w miodzie tego pięknego przekazu są przejażdżki słoniami oferowane zwiedzającym. Jaka szkoda, byłoby o tyle etyczniej bez nich.

At some point we take a break, sit in the shadow  and demolish a few lime squashes and fresh coconuts.

W którymś momencie robimy sobie przerwę, siadamy w cieniu drzew i osuszamy kilka szklanek świeżo wyciskanego soku z limonek z kruszonym lodem i swieży sok z kokosa.

We go back to the exit through the forested area full of sculptures, on the opposite side of the lake.

Wracamy do wyjścia zalesionym  i gęsto poprzetykanym rzeźbami kawałkiem terenu po drugiej stronie jeziora.

Rhinefield House Hotel

We have visited Rhinefield House Hotel on a few occasions, as it is located in a beautiful spot of New Forest, not far from the Rhinefield Ornamental Drive, notable for its giant redwood trees.

Rhinefield House Hotel odwiedzilśmy już kilka razy, ponieważ znajduje się on w pięknym miejscu w New Forest, niedaleko od Rhinefield Ornamental Drive wyróżniającej się gigantycznymi sekwojami.

This time we came to check some locations for future photoshoots with models in a nearby area, so we decided to book an afternoon tea in the hotel as well.

It is not the cheapest treat, but they try to do it relatively posh. There is a lot of food, and it is rather nice, too.

Tym razem przyjechaliśmy sprawdzić kilka miejsc w New Forest na przyszłe sesje zdjęciowe, więc postanowiliśmy przy okazji zarezerwować również afternoon tea w hotelu. Nie jest to najtańsza opcja, ale trzeba przyznać, ze Rhinefield House stara się zrobić to dość szykownie. Jedzenia jest naprawdę dużo i jest dobre.

We also popped in to their beautiful Alhambra room, a replica of the one of Grenada-based palace interiors, decorated with Persian onyx, copper, Venetian glass and mosaics.

Zajrzeliśmy także do ich przepięknej sali Alhambra, repliki jednego z wnętrz słynnego Hiszpańskiego pałacu, ozdobionej perskim onyksem, miedzią, weneckim szkłem i mozaikami.

St Cuthbert’s Church

We went to find a nice cafe, but we stopped a few times on the way. First, within a large churchyard that bonds Princess Street Gardens with Lothian Road, at the foot of the castle rock, we found St Cuthbert’s Church, also known as West Kirk. This church was damaged and rebuilt many times. The current building was built in the XIX century in cream sandstone, and its most immense pride are stained glass windows, including one by Tiffany.

Poszliśmy szukać przyjemnej kafejki, ale po drodze bylo kilka innych wartych obejrzenia rzeczy. Na dużym dziedzińcu przykościelnym, który łączy Princess Street Gardens z Lothian Road, u podnóża zamkowej skały, znależliśmy skościół św. Cuthberta, znany również jako West Kirk. Kościół ten był wielokrotnie niszczony i przebudowywany. Obecny budynek został zbudowany w XIX wieku z kremowego piaskowca, a jego największą ozdobą są witraże, w tym jeden autorstwa Tiffany'ego.
