Tim Burton

The Design Museum in London offers a rare opportunity to tumble down the rabbit hole into Tim Burton’s mind. And tumble we did. Running until 26 May 2025, The World of Tim Burton is a fantastical, slightly eerie, and utterly enchanting exhibition that invites visitors to explore the creative universe of the man behind Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, and The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Design Museum w Londynie daje niepowtarzalną okazję, by zajrzeć do świata wyobraźni Tima Burtona i nie zawahaliśmy się z niej skorzystać. Wystawa The World of Tim Burton, otwarta jest do 26 maja 2025 roku i jest to fantastyczna, nieco mroczna, ale pełna uroku podróż po świecie jednego z najbardziej charakterystycznych twórców współczesnego kina – autora takich filmów jak Sok z żuka, Edward Nożycoręki czy Miasteczko Halloween.

Before we entered the gallery we were distracted for a moment by the “Barbie” exhibition.

Zanim weszliśmy do galerii rozproszyły nas na chwilę elementy wystawy poświęconej Barbie.

The journey begins in Burbank, California—a place Burton once described as “Anywhere, USA.” Here, we find early sketches, stop-motion experiments, and even a rejection letter from Disney praising his imagination but noting the similarity to Dr Seuss. A replica of Burton’s cluttered desk, complete with watercolours, doodles, and a Curse of Frankenstein mug, offers a glimpse into his formative years.

Zwiedzanie zaczyna się w Burbank w Kalifornii – miejscu, które sam Burton określił kiedyś jako „gdziekolwiek w USA”. W tej części wystawy można zobaczyć jego pierwsze szkice, eksperymenty z animacją poklatkową, a także list od Disneya, w którym studio zachwyca się jego wyobraźnią, ale sugeruje, że jego styl za bardzo przypomina Dr. Seussa. Odtworzono tu również biurko młodego Burtona – pełne farbek, bazgrołów i kubka z motywem Curse of Frankenstein.

The next section delves into Burton's fascination with carnivals, horror films, and stop-motion animation. His early works were heavily influenced by a love for the grotesque and fantastical. The exhibition features sketches and models from these early stop-motion films, capturing his obsession with fantasy and festivity.

Kolejna część ekspozycji skupia się na inspiracjach Burtona: cyrku, karnawale, horrorze i animacji poklatkowej. Widać tu wyraźnie jego fascynację groteską i światem dziwności. W gablotach można podziwiać szkice i modele z jego pierwszych projektów animacyjnych – pełnych fantazji i absurdalnego humoru.

Then we step into Burton's cinematic universes, where thirteen key films are showcased. Unique ‘shadow box’ walls with internal lighting and silhouettes of recognisable filmic worlds bring characters like Jack Skellington and Edward Scissorhands to life. It's incredibly creative—and quite beautiful, too. This vivid installation explores how Burton’s imagination has shaped some of cinema’s most iconic landscapes.

Potem wkraczamy do filmowych światów Burtona – trzynaście najważniejszych filmów zostało zaprezentowanych w formie teatralnych "shadow boxów", z podświetlanymi tłami i charakterystycznymi sylwetkami postaci/miejsc z tych filmów. To wyjątkowa okazja, by zobaczyć, jak styl Burtona wpływał na kształtowanie całych filmowych rzeczywistości.

A winding corridor, reminiscent of the Beetlejuice after-world, leads us into a gallery-style display of Burton’s drawings. From early sketches to unrealised projects, this section showcases his prolific output as an artist and visual storyteller. It’s a testament to his gift for crafting compelling narratives through illustration alone.

Długi, zakręcony korytarz przypominający zaświaty z Soku z żuka prowadzi nas do galerii rysunków Burtona. Znajdują się tu zarówno jego wczesne szkice, jak i projekty, które nigdy nie doczekały się realizacji. Ta część wystawy pokazuje, jak bogata jest jego wyobraźnia i jak umiejętnie potrafi opowiadać historie samym obrazem.

The final section moves beyond cinema, exploring Burton’s creative endeavours in books, music videos, and collaborations with designers inspired by his "Burtonesque" aesthetic. Concluding our journey is a specially commissioned short film that provides insight into Burton’s creative process and includes interviews with key collaborators.

This “Beyond Film” section also highlights Burton’s impact on the fashion industry. It showcases collaborations with designers who have drawn inspiration from his work, including Alexander McQueen’s "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" collection, which reflects Burton’s dark romanticism and imaginative flair.

W ostatniej części wystawy wychodzimy poza kino. Zobaczymy tu książki ilustrowane przez Burtona, jego projekty do teledysków i wyniki współpracy z artystami oraz projektantami, którzy czerpią z jego charakterystycznego stylu. Uwagę przyciąga zwłaszcza zrekonstruowane kino Avalon – miejsce, w którym Burton spędzał godziny jako nastolatek.

W tej części wystawy znajdziemy też modowe nawiązania – między innymi projekty Alexandra McQueena, który inspirował się mroczną estetyką Burtona. Jego kolekcja Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious to prawdziwa uczta dla fanów gotyckiego romantyzmu.

Afternoon tea and Christmas market

Afternoon tea at Blenheim was not bad but also not awesome and definitely not quite worth the price tag.  Do we regret having it? Probably not. Maybe just a little bit, knowing that the surrounding area was filled with tempting street food options Will we repeat it? Nope. But it was a part of the experience, and it did add a unique touch to our visit.

„Popołudniowa herbata” w Blenheim, (afternoon tea to w UK popołudniowy posiłek, składajacy się z kanapek lub innych przekąsek, deserów i herbaty lub kawy), nie była zła, ale też nie była niesamowita i zdecydowanie nie była warta swojej ceny. Czy żałujemy, że ją zamówiliśmy? Raczej nie. Może odrobinę, wiedząc, że okolica była pełna bud sprzedających street food. Czy zamówimy w kolejnych latach? Nie sądzę. Ale była to część doświadczenia w tym roku i nie ma co rwać włosów z głowy.

And then, until it was dark enough to go for the light trail, we wandered around the Christmas market, drinking mould wine and fortified chocolate (with just a splash of Baileys), and I treated myself to a new pair of earrings.

A potem, zanim zrobiło się na tyle ciemno, żeby pójść na ścieżki światła, łaziliśmy sobie po jarmarku bożonarodzeniowym, popijając grzańca i gorącą czekoladę wzmocnioną odrobiną Baileysa, a ja sprawiłam sobie też nową parę kolczyków.

Neverland in Blenheim

As we stepped through the main door of Blenheim Palace, we entered the Neverland. Literally. The opulent staterooms have been beautifully reimagined this Christmas to bring to life scenes from J.M. Barrie's classic, “Peter Pan”. Each room has been transformed into a vibrant storybook tableau, creating a beautiful, immersive experience.

Przekraczając główne drzwi Blenheim Palace, wchodzimy do Nibylandii. Wystawne pokoje pałacu zostały na czas świat zamienione w sceny z klasycznej książki J.M. Barrie, „Piotruś Pan”.  

We marvelled at the sight of Peter Pan soaring behind a window while Nana kept her watchful eye on the cosy living room. Following the enchanting glow of Tinkerbell, we wandered through the lavishly decorated state rooms, adorned with sparkling baubles and festive Christmas trees.

Piotruś Pan szybował za oknem, podczas gdy Nana czujnie obserwowała przytulny salon. Podążając za czarującym blaskiem Dzwoneczka, przeszliśmy przez bogato dekorowane komnaty pałacowe, pełne błyszczących bombek i świątecznych choinek.

Our adventure continued as we strolled through a moonlit London skyline, arriving at the captivating Mermaid Lagoon. We could hear the ticking of the clock that had been swallowed by the fearsome crocodile and even had the chance to meet the infamous Captain Hook aboard his magnificent pirate ship.

Nasza przygoda trwała dalej, gdy przechadzaliśmy się po rozświetlonej księżycem panoramie Londynu, docierając w końcu do urzekającej Zatoki Syren. Mogliśmy też usłyszeć tykanie zegara, który został połknięty przez słynnego krokodyla, a nawet mieliśmy okazję spotkać niesławnego kapitana Hooka na pokładzie jego pirackiego statku.

As part of our magical journey, we also took a moment to tie a ribbon to the Wishes Tree, and visited the Great Ormond Street Hospital. Our visit was a splendid escape into a storied world and then we followed with an afternoon tea.

Na końcu poświęciliśmy również chwilę na zawiązanie wstążki na Drzewie Życzeń i odwiedziliśmy Great Ormond Street Hospital. Nasza wizyta była wspaniałą ucieczką do świata znanego z dziecięcej historii a potem poszliśmy na popołudniową herbatkę.

Sarum Lights 2024

This week, Salisbury Cathedral unveiled a new light and sound experience, elegantly crafted by Luxmuralis for the latest edition of Sarum Lights. This immersive event transformed the Cathedral into a canvas of light, filling both its west front exterior and many places in the interior with mesmerizing projection installations.

W tym tygodniu Katedra w Salisbury zaprezentowała nowy spektakl światła i dźwięku, zaprojektowany przez Luxmuralis na potrzeby najnowszej edycji festiwalu Sarum Lights. Katedra zamieniła się w płótno na którym światłem malowane były obrazy – projekcje obejmowały zachodnią fasadę, jak i wiele miejsc wewnątrz katedry.

Entitled Time, this year’s spectacle delved deep into humanity’s complex relationship with time—a theme that resonates through the ages. From the intricate workings of clocks to the vast expanses of history, science, and art, visitors embarked on an journey of exploration how time has shaped our lives, influenced great thinkers, and inspired artists throughout history.

Tegoroczny spektakl zatytułowany Czas zagłębił się w złożoną relację ludzkości z czasem — temat, który rezonuje przez wieki. Od skomplikowanych mechanizmów zegarów po rozległe obszary historii, nauki i sztuki, projekcje skłaniały do myślenia, jak czas kształtował nasze życie, wpływał na wielkich myślicieli i inspirował artystów na przestrzeni dziejów.

As guests wandered through the Cathedral, they were treated to stunning projections that illustrated the profound narrative of time, with evocative visuals and quotations from H.G. Wells’ The Time Machine.

This year extra addition was an interactive installation titled ‘A Note to Myself.’ It encouraged attendees to pen messages to their younger, current or future selves.

Kilka różnych projekcji ilustrowało narrację na temat czasu, z sugestywnymi wizualizacjami i cytatami z Wehikułu Czasu H.G. Wellsa.

W tym roku festiwalowi towarzyszyła dodatkowo interaktywna instalacja zatytułowana „Notatka do siebie”. Zachęcała ona uczestników do napisania wiadomości do młodszych, obecnych lub przyszłych wersji samego siebie.

Ghurka’s Inn

Tonight, we are off for the Mesmerica show in the Winchester Planetarium but on the way there we decided to stop for dinner. Our choice was the Ghurka’s Inn, located on City Street  -  an independent restaurant serving authentic Nepalese and Indian cuisine. With a focus on expertly blending spices and ingredients, the menu showcases an array of dishes that highlight rich aromas and authentic flavours of both regions. The atmosphere was welcoming and laid-back, the food was quite good, and the service was efficient and friendly. Now we are ready for the show.

Dzisiaj wieczorem wybieramy się na pokaz Mesmerica w Winchester Planetarium, ale po drodze postanowiliśmy zatrzymać się na kolację. Wybraliśmy Ghurka's Inn, położoną na City Street restaurację serwującą autentyczną kuchnię nepalską i indyjską. Tutejszy szef kuchni skupiając się na fachowym łączeniu przypraw i składników, oferuje szereg dań podkreślających bogate aromaty i autentyczne smaki obu regionów. Atmosfera była przyjazna i swobodna, jedzenie było całkiem dobre, a obsługa była sprawna i przyjazna. Teraz jesteśmy gotowi na pokaz.
