Christmas at Kew part 2

The next big installation is called Treetop Rock, and as we approach, the unmistakable sound of rock music blasts from the speakers, instantly energising the atmosphere. Towering trees and mist generators create a stunning backdrop for the show. Bursts of laser beams pierce through the mist, casting mesmerising patterns in the air. The pulsating music, dazzling lights, and cyclic appearance of mist create a spectacular display.

Następna duża instalacja nazywa się „Treetop Rock” i słychać ją już z daleka, z głośników rozbrzmiewają bowiem dźwięki świątecznej muzyki rockowej. Wysokie drzewa i generatory mgły są kluczowym elementem tej instalacji. Wiązki kolorowych laserów przebijają się przez mgłę, malując dynamiczne wzory w powietrzu. Pulsująca muzyka, kolorowe światła i pojawiająca się cyklicznie mgła tworzą spektakularny pokaz.

After passing under huge festive arches, we find ourselves inside yet another stunning installation: Spark Ballet & Floating Candles. We are greeted by hundreds of candles suspended gracefully in the air, creating the surreal illusion that they are floating above our heads. Additionally, there are lanterns hanging on trees and placed on the ground, with the light flickering inside to create an effect as if those lights are dancing.

Po przejściu pod ogromnymi świątecznymi łukami znajdujemy się w środku kolejnej wielkiej instalacji: „Spark Ballet & Floating Candles.” Witają nas tu setki świec zawieszonych w powietrzu, tworząc surrealistyczną iluzję, że unoszą się nad naszymi głowami. Dodatkowo na drzewach i na ziemi wiszą też latarnie, a światło migocze w ich środku, tworząc efekt, jakby te światła tańczyły do muzyki.

We then pass by the giant illuminated lily flowers that tower nearly three meters high, their vibrant blooms and expansive leaves reaching toward the sky. After that, we find ourselves entering one of the longest light tunnels ever featured at “Christmas at Kew”. Made of bright, ever-changing light tubes, the tunnel wraps around us like a captivating ribbon of colour, guiding us forward. Each step through the tunnel reveals a new combination of hues, immersing us in a dazzling display. Emerging from the tunnel, we are greeted by the sight of 22 enormous moonlight flowers glowing in vivid red.

Następnie mijamy gigantyczne, świecące kwiaty lilii, które wznoszą się na wysokość prawie trzech metrów, a ich jaskrawe kwiaty i liście zdają się sięgać nieba. Za liliami wchodzimy do jednego z najdłuższych tuneli świetlnych, jakie kiedykolwiek zaprezentowano podczas „Christmas at Kew”. Zbudowany z ciągle zmieniających kolor świetlówek tunel ciągnie jak urzekająca wstęga barw, prowadząc nas do kolejnego miejsca. Wychodząc z tunelu, wita nas widok 22 ogromnych kwiatów księżycowych świecących na czerwono.

Christmas at Kew part 1

It's our inaugural journey through the Christmas light trail at Kew, and although we're aware it's going to be a relatively long walk (the website suggests allowing around two hours to wander through the display that spans roughly 3 km), we’re ready for the experience. The weather isn’t exactly cooperating; a little drizzle tries to dampen the spirits, but we're fortified by the warmth of our hot mulled wine, which sets a cheerful tone for the evening.

To nasza pierwsza wizyta na szlaku świątecznych świateł w Kew i chociaż zdajemy sobie sprawę, że będzie to długi spacer (strona internetowa sugeruje, aby przeznaczyć około dwóch godzin na wędrówkę trasą, która zajmuje około 3 km), jesteśmy gotowi. Pogoda nie do końca współpracuje — pada lekka mżawka, która może jeszcze przeobrazić się w porządny deszcz, ale póki co grzane winko nie pozwala nam się zanadto tym martwić.

As we stroll along Camellia Walk, we find ourselves enveloped in a dazzling spectacle of over 400 vibrant lights cascading from the tree canopy above. The colours dance and change in perfect harmony with the music that fills the air. The pictures do not make this spectacle justice.

Idąc wzdłuż Camellia Walk, podziwiamy instalację ponad 400 świateł zwisających z koron drzew powyżej. Kolory tańczą i zmieniają się w harmonii z sączącą się z głośników muzyką. Zdjęcia nie oddają niestety uroku tej instalacji.

After meandering past a handful of charming smaller installations, and traversing the tunnel of ever moving lights, we step into the Fire Garden, with more than 300 flickering candles illuminating the path leading to the Temperate House—the oldest Victorian glasshouse in the world. The soft glow of the flames dances in the breeze while the glass houses stand majestically, seemingly glowing from within. The aroma of burning wood and oil fills the air, mingling with the cool night. The gentle crackle of the open flames creates a soothing soundtrack, wrapping us in an embrace of warmth amidst the chill of the evening.

Po przejściu obok kilku mniejszych instalacji i przekroczeniu tunelu ze swiatel przypominających spadajace gwiazdy, wkraczamy do Ogrodu Ognia, gdzie ponad 300 migoczących świec oświetla ścieżkę prowadzącą do Temperate House — najstarszej wiktoriańskiej szklarni na świecie. Ciepły blask płomieni tańczy na wietrze przed majestatycznymi szklarniami, które zdają się same świecić od środka. W powietrzu unosi się aromat palonego drewna i oleju, mieszający się z chłodną nocą. Od lampionów bije ciepło, otulające nas przyjaźnie pośród wieczornego chłodu.

Continuing our journey, we make our way to the next grand installation known as Electric Avenue. The cherry blossom trees lining the avenue have been transformed into a dazzling display of lights. We stand for a while despite the cold to watch the show of lights and music.

Kontynuując naszą trasę, udajemy się do kolejnej instalacji znanej jako „Electric Avenue”. Drzewa wiśniowe wzdłuż jednej alei zostały tu przekształcone w olśniewający pokaz świateł, zmieniających się oczywiście w rytm muzyki. Stoimy tu przez chwilę mimo chodu i oglądamy ten pokaz.

Now, it is time to eat, drink, and warm ourselves up before we get going. We head toward the nearby food stalls, where the atmosphere buzzes with laughter and chatter as people gather around, enjoying the festive spirit.

Teraz czas coś zjeść, napić się i rozgrzać, zanim ruszymy w dalszą drogę. Kierujemy się zatem w stronę pobliskich stoisk z jedzeniem, gdy ludzie gromadzą się przy jedzeniu i pogawędkach.

Sarum Lights

Around Christmas time there are many light installations around, and we decided to start the season with the Sarum Lights at the Salisbury Cathedral. The Illuminating Art performance is prepared by Luxmuralis.

We start outside with a dramatic display of baroque art on the entire west front of the cathedral. The show lasts 10 minutes but it takes us about 2.5 cycles to get it all in. So after about 25 minutes, we are ready to get inside.

W okresie Bożego Narodzenia wokół nas jest wiele instalacji świetlnych, ale postanawiamy rozpocząć sezon od „Sarum Lights” w katedrze w Salisbury. Spektakl „Sztuka Iluminacji” został przygotowany przez Luxmuralis.

Show zaczyna się na zewnątrz od dramatycznego pokazu sztuki barokowej na całym zachodnim froncie katedry. Jeden cykl wyświetlania obrazów trwa 10 minut, ale ogarnięcie wszystkiego, na co patrzymy zajmuje nam około 2,5 cyklu. Zatem po około 25 minutach jesteśmy gotowi, aby wejść do środka.

 In the Cloisters, we literally walk through various 18th-century philosophy and literature texts.

W Krużgankach dosłownie chodzimy w środku różnych XVIII-wiecznych tekstów filozoficznych i literackich.

After entering the south transept, we can see a “gallery” of images depicting the social changes and philosophical thoughts of the late 17th and 18th Century. The Trinity Chapel explores the conflicts of the late 18th century and early 19th century. War, conflicts, and the abolition of slavery are the main topics of the presentation.

Po wejściu do południowego transeptu naszym oczom ukazuje się „galeria” obrazów przedstawiających przemiany społeczne i myśli filozoficzne końca XVII i XVIII wieku. Kaplica Trójcy Świętej przywołuje konflikty końca XVIII i początku XIX wieku. Głównymi tematami prezentacji są wojny, sprzeczności interesów i zniesienie niewolnictwa.

Then we walk through the sounds and images related to the Industrial Revolution. We are surrounded by engines, gears, cogs and chains that symbolise society overtaken by fast-paced industrial changes.

Dalej idziemy wśród dźwięków i obrazów związanych z rewolucją przemysłową. Otaczają nas różne elementy maszyn, przekładnie, koła zębate i łańcuchy, które symbolizują społeczeństwo opanowane przez szybkie zmiany przemysłowe.

And finally, in the main nave, there is the most dazzling display of poems and paintings including famous pieces by Van Gogh, Monet, Renoir or Cezanne. This is my favourite part of the show.

I wreszcie, w nawie głównej,  ma miejscy najbardziej imponująca preentacja wierszy i obrazów, w tym słynnych dzieł Van Gogha, Moneta, Renoira czy Cezanne'a. To moja ulubiona część całego programu.

Alice

 Tonight we found ourselves at the Garden Society again, this time for a cabaret dinner inspired by the story of Alice.

Dzisiejszego wieczoru znowu znaleźliśmy się w the Garden Society, tym razem na kabaretowym obiedzie inspirowanym historią Alicji.

They prepared the room very well, I almost didn't recognise where I was.

Bardzo fajnie przygotowali salę, prawie nie rozpoznałam gdzie jestem.

The dinner was very pleasant, especially the baked camembert with vegetables.

Obiad był bardzo przyjemny, zwłaszcza pieczony camembert z warzywami.

 The cabaret shows were quite varied, and we both had a great time.

Występy kabaretowe były dość różnorodne i bardzo dobrze się obydwoje bawiliśmy.

Chelsea in Bloom: Flowers on Film

This year's Chelsea in Bloom takes inspiration straight from the silver screen. Under the theme “Flowers on Film”, floral installations across the Chelsea district bring iconic movie moments to life — from larger-than-life characters to scenes etched in cinematic history. From Sloane Street to Sloane Square, along King’s Road, and throughout Duke of York Square, more than 100 displays transform the neighbourhood into a vibrant, petal-covered celebration of film.

Tegoroczna edycja festiwalu Chelsea in Bloom przenosi odwiedzających prosto do świata kina. Tematem przewodnim jest bowiem „Flowers on Film”, czyli kwiaty na ekranie. Dzielnica Chelsea zamieniła się w wielką, otwartą galerię instalacji inspirowanych filmami – od klasyki po popkulturowe hity. Ponad 100 ekspozycji rozmieszczonych jest wzdłuż Sloane Street, na Sloane Square, wzdłuż King’s Road i w okolicach Duke of York Square.

The floral trail begins at the Carlton Tower Jumeirah, where a striking recreation of King Kong, crafted entirely from black moss, dangles dramatically from the hotel’s entrance. A second Kong makes an appearance nearby — this time clutching the Big Ben, towering at the corner of Sloane Street and Cadogan Place.

Jedna z pierwszych instalacji znajduje się przy hotelu Carlton Tower Jumeirah – ogromna figura King Konga, wykonana z czarnego mchu, zwisa dramatycznie nad wejściem. Kolejna wersja tej kultowej postaci pojawia się nieco dalej, gdzie Kong wspina się na wieżę Big Bena przy skrzyżowaniu Sloane Street i Cadogan Place.

Several brands have embraced the theme with their own creative interpretations. Meadows from various movies make a popular plot. For example, Jo Malone offers a botanical tribute to the British landscape as seen through the lens of film — wildflowers like thistles, heather, and lavender evoke the spirit of the Scottish Highlands. Me+EM follows a similar path, designing a wildflower meadow inspired by David Attenborough’s nature documentaries. LK Bennett takes a more nostalgic turn with pastel-hued blooms reminiscent of My Fair Lady.

Szczególnie popularnym tematem jest łąka. Na przykład, Jo Malone stworzyło instalację inspirowaną brytyjskimi krajobrazami widzianymi w filmach – dzikie kwiaty, lawenda, wrzosy i osty przywodzą na myśl szkockie wyżyny. Marka Me+EM przygotowała łąkę pełną dzikich roślin, nawiązując do dokumentów przyrodniczych Davida Attenborough, a LK Bennett postawiło na pastelowe kompozycje, które przywołują klimat musicalu My Fair Lady.

The floral journey takes a dramatic turn at The Sloane Club, where My Fair Lady is again brought to life in a show-stopping display. Two elegant women, dressed in period costumes straight from the iconic film, are positioned alongside a life-sized horse.

My Fair Lady pojawia się także w efektownej instalacji przy Sloane Club. Dwie eleganckie kobiety, urbane w kostiumy z epoki, stoją obok konia w rzeczywistej wielkości.

Tiffany & Co. takes inspiration from Breakfast at Tiffany’s, featuring a giant version of Audrey Hepburn’s iconic pearl necklace, while Cartier transforms its storefront with elegant white flowers. Just around the corner, Hackett embraces the glamour of Murder on the Orient Express, with their façade evoking the luxury of Agatha Christie’s famous train.

On Sloane Square, a scene from Jurassic Park is brought to life with a T-rex devouring a person made entirely of grass and flowers, surrounded by movie cameras and a clapperboard.

Na Sloane Square ożywa scena z Jurassic Park, gdzie T-rex pożera postać zrobioną w całości z trawy i kwiatów, a całość uzupełniają kamery filmowe i klaps reżyserski.

Not far away, Peter Jones’ window display channels the whimsical world of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, while MZ Skin is adorned with pink flowers and floral-covered masks.

Niedaleko, witryna sklepu Peter Jones nawiązuje do bajkowego świata Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, a MZ Skin jest ozdobiony różowymi kwiatami i maskami z kwiatowymi motywami.

At Duke of York Square, The Lion King’s “Circle of Life” is reimagined, with Rafiki presenting Simba to an assembly of animals. Nearby, Self-Portrait showcases a giant Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland, whilst Cole & Son’s display on Jubilee Place features large playing cards and red roses, also inspired by the same classic.

A BAFTA mask installation adds a cinematic touch to Dovehouse Green, celebrating the art of film with floral artistry. And Ivy Chelsea brings scenes from Wind in the Willows, with Mr. Toad and Badger among the wildflowers and wisteria.

Na Dovehouse Green można zobaczyć instalację z kwiatową wersją maski BAFTA — to hołd dla świata kina i jeden z najbardziej symbolicznych punktów całej wystawy. Zaś Ivy Chelsea prezentuje sceny z O czym Szumią Wierzby z Panem Łasicą i Borsukiem wśród dzikich kwiatów i wisterii.
